Data Portal Drenthe: All Data About Drenthe in One Place

The province of Drenthe has a wealth of information about the region: from statistics on housing and the economy, maps of soil and nature, to dashboards on energy and storymaps about the wolf. This valuable knowledge was scattered across dozens of tools, viewers, and reports. This made it difficult for residents, entrepreneurs, and professionals to quickly find the right information.

One Access Point for All Data

With the Data Portal Drenthe, the province has now created a single central access point. Here, everyone can find all data, information, and knowledge about Drenthe, regardless of which system it was originally stored in.

What We Built

The Data Portal is not a new data silo, but a smart, clear catalog that sits on top of existing sources. Each item – from ArcGIS storymaps to Power BI dashboards and external map viewers – gets its own place with a clear description, image, and keywords. This way, visitors can quickly and easily find the right source without duplicating content.

Key features:

  • 22 themes, such as Waste, Soil, Water, Welfare, and Housing, each with its own introduction and overview of topics.
  • Search and filter by keyword, type (map, dashboard, storymap, monitor), and subject, including a tag cloud that leads directly to related data.
  • Current highlights on the homepage, including the RES Monitor, the map of former landfills, and the storymap about wolves in Drenthe.
  • Map catalog as access to the public map catalog, Atlas Leefomgeving, and PDOK viewer.
  • Management environment where the province’s Data Team manages themes, items, images, and tags themselves, without relying on developers.

Technical Implementation

The portal was developed with Laravel, combined with Tailwind CSS and Vite. The design follows the corporate identity of the province of Drenthe and is set up accessibly, including a skip link to the main content and a clear navigation structure.

Result

The Data Portal Drenthe is now the central place where the province publishes and maintains all its data. New dashboards and maps are published within minutes and are immediately findable via themes, search functions, and keywords. This improves the accessibility of regional data for everyone who works with it or is interested.
